A public art project puts the work of living artists into schools. The project for Aretha Franklin College, initiated by the Department of Seine Saint-Denis, is a study of the imagined city we call Alentour. The artist Heidi Wood came to Alentour as a tourist and made artworks to represent what she liked there. Five classes from the school created maps, heraldry and coats of arms to show how they see Alentour. These two studies prepare Alentour’s application to become a Unesco World Heritage site. The artworks will decorate the school forever. They remind us of our dream of an ideal city.

The students’ heraldry included over a hundred images to represent Alentour. This heraldry was used to make coats of arms to express the identity of Alentour’s residents.

Heidi spent a lot of time walking around Alentour before making her artworks. She did drawings and took photos. Then she imagined different types of visuals to show what she liked best.

Pictogrammes Representations of the facades of buildings Silhouettes of photos. Collages made of black masking tape

Heidi combined these visuals into bigger works for the corridors on the first and second floors of the school. When she came to the college to work with Alentour’s residents, the way she saw Alentour changed. She decided to include some of the heraldry designed by the students in her works.

Then she turned all the works into computer files for the workshop that would produce the artworks in enamel panels. This workshop also makes street signs and signage for public transport. When steel plates are covered in enamel and cooked at high temperature in an oven, they become very shock-resistant (but that’s no reason to beat them up!). The artworks were installed in the college in July 2020.
