Ce projet est le 1% artistique du nouveau Collège Aretha Franklin à Drancy dans le département de la Seine Saint-Denis. En France, quand on construit certains bâtiments publics, on finance aussi des œuvres d’un artiste vivant. Ces œuvres décorent le bâtiment mais elles peuvent aussi donner à réfléchir. Le projet Alentour de Heidi Wood a été choisi pour ce collège. Heidi a créé des œuvres pour les couloirs. Les collégiens en ont imaginé d’autres pendant les ateliers qu’elle a animés. Alentour est une création collective réalisée avec les classes 6ème 4, 3ème 1, 3ème 3, 3ème 5 et UPE2A.

This is the public art project for the new high school in Drancy, Seine Saint-Denis, called Aretha Franklin College. In France, when new public buildings go up, some of the money is used for works by a living artist. These artworks decorate the building but they can also make you think. The project Alentour by Heidi Wood was chosen for this school. Heidi designed works for the corridors. The students created others in workshops with her. Alentour is a collaboration between Heidi and the classes 6ème 4, 3ème 1, 3ème 3, 3ème 5 and UPE2A.

C’EST QUOI, ALENTOUR ?

Le Collège Aretha Franklin se trouve à Drancy. Ses élèves viennent de trois villes : Drancy, La Courneuve et Bobigny. Nous allons imaginer une nouvelle ville autour du collège qui s’appellera Alentour. Elle sera assez grande pour accueillir tous les élèves. Puis, nous allons réfléchir ensemble sur ce qui fait d’Alentour un endroit exceptionnel. Est-ce les monuments ou les traditions des personnes qui y habitent ?

Aretha Franklin College is in Drancy. The students come from three towns: Drancy, La Courneuve and Bobigny. We’re going to imagine a new city around the school called Alentour. It will be big enough to house all the students. Then we’ll think about what makes Alentour special. Is it the monuments or the traditions of the people who live there?

    Où sont les endroits importants d’Alentour ? Où sont ses limites territoriales ? Quelles sont ses traditions ? Il nous faut une ville qui inclut la vie de tout le monde. D’abord, traçons le trajet de la maison jusqu’au collège. Puis, ajoutons les repères sur le chemin et les endroits importants pour la vie en dehors de l’école. Faisons une carte subjective d’Alentour, avec des endroits qui existent et des endroits rêvés. Alentour, c’est la vraie ville en mieux.

    Where are the important places in Alentour? Where are its borders? What are its traditions? Our new city needs to include everyone’s lives. We’ll start by drawing the journey from home to school. Then we’ll add places that are important for life outside school. Our map of Alentour is subjective, with real and imagined places. Alentour is reality only better.
